Our Mission

Our Mission

SENIORS HELPING SENIORS

Our Mission is to improve the lifestyle of Seniors who are on a fixed income to help subsidize monthly food allowance.  Many Seniors are having to make a choice between buying groceries or buying needed and necessary medicine.  We want to help seniors to enjoy a better quality of life.

My Story

My spiritual beliefs have always centered on the idea that we are all here to serve one another, and I strive to live by this principle every day. Recently, I faced significant health challenges that altered the course of my life, leading to an early retirement. As I adjusted to these changes, I found myself moving into a 55+ senior apartment complex. The concept of a "fixed income," which I had once heard about growing up, became my reality. I was placed on disability benefits, which meant that my income was limited to a single monthly disbursement. This income had to cover all of my expenses—rent, utilities, and groceries. It required careful budgeting, and at times, sacrifices were necessary to make ends meet. I had to stretch my grocery budget to last throughout the month, and while this was a challenging new reality, I came to realize that I was not alone in facing these struggles.

The apartment complex where I reside has a community pantry, intended to assist residents who have surplus food items or lack transportation to access food resources. One day, the complex manager asked me if I could volunteer to help organize the pantry on a weekly basis. This opportunity allowed me to tap into my passion for serving others, particularly seniors who often fall below the poverty radar. I witnessed firsthand how many elderly residents were struggling with access to nutritious food, and I realized that there was a significant gap that needed to be filled. In December 2022, I launched "Servin’ Our Seniors," a human services initiative aimed at addressing nutritional gaps for seniors aged 55 and older who are no longer employed and face limited access to healthy food due to financial constraints and/or lack of transportation. Many of these seniors rely on SSI/SSA and SNAP benefits, but these resources often fall short, leaving them without sufficient means to get through the month. The vision of Servin’ Our Seniors is to provide healthy meals and essential personal items to seniors at no cost, while eliminating the barriers to access. We are committed to serving seniors 55 and older by bringing food directly to them, particularly those who are unable to visit pantries or food distribution sites. We offer them the dignity of selecting their own food and personal items in a more personalized, respectful setting. This service is provided at least once a month, with volunteers available to assist if needed. Our goal is not to offer a handout, but a "hand up"—empowering seniors to regain their independence while ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive.
